As I was preparing to send the code I realised that I had not ended the document I was trying to produce!
It now works fine on a test page.

I am a complete novice to Latex. (1 Beta 7.01) and MikTeX 2.5.2574
fancyhdr package produces emergency stop when you build the file
the log transcript says
'("C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.5\tex\latex\fancyhdr\fancyhdr.sty"
\fancy@headwidth=\skip43

\f@ncyO@olh ...
