Hey People,
I just had the same problem as you and, for me, the solution was very easy: I included my .bib file as follows:

\bibliographystyle{elsarticle-harv}
\bibliography{thesis_ref.bib}

... whereas the ending .bib must not be written down:

\bibliographystyle{elsarticle-harv}
\bibliography ...
