Headers in front matter of book class

I'm a beginner at LATEX and using it to write my thesis.... thought it'll be better the using MS word for 300 pages. But I'm having trouble changing the headers (as in headers and footers) in the \frontmatter of the book class (I'm using this class to write my thesis). I don't like it in capitals ...
