Changing name of Abstract

Postby templateuser » Tue Mar 24, 2015 8:30 am

  1. % Thesis Abstract -----------------------------------------------------
  2.
  3.
  4. %\begin{abstractslong} %uncommenting this line, gives a different abstract heading
  5. \begin{abstracts} %this creates the heading for the abstract page
  6.
  7. Put your abstract or summary here, if your university requires it.
  8.
  9. \end{abstracts}
  10. %\end{abstractlongs}
  11.
  12.
  13. % ----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is used for abstract, acknowledgements etc. I was wondering how to change the name as I want to add in a Mission Statement page but with the same layout. How do I do this? I have tried a few different ways and I can't get them to work...

Thanks for your help
Laura

Hi Laura,

To make a Mission Statement page in this template, go into Thesis.cls and add the following after \addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{#1}} on line 321:

  1. \newenvironment{mission}
  2. {
  3. \btypeout{Mission Page}
  4. \thispagestyle{empty}
  5. \null\vfil
  6. \begin{center}
  7. \setlength{\parskip}{0pt}
  8. {\normalsize \UNIVNAME \par} % University name in capitals
  9. \bigskip
  10. {\huge{\textit{Mission Statement}} \par}
  11. \bigskip
  12. {\normalsize \facname \par} % Faculty name
  13. {\normalsize \deptname \par} % Department name
  14. \bigskip
  15. {\normalsize \degreename\par} % Degree name
  16. \bigskip
  17. {\normalsize\bf \@title \par} % Thesis title
  18. \medskip
  19. {\normalsize by \authornames \par} % Author name
  20. \bigskip
  21. \end{center}
  22. }

then, go into main.tex and add the following just after the ABSTRACT PAGE section:

  1. \addtotoc{Mission Statement} % Add the "Abstract" page entry to the Contents
  2.
  3. \mission{\addtocontents{toc}{\vspace{1em}} % Add a gap in the Contents, for aesthetics
  4.
  5. Mission statement text\ldots
  6. }
  7.
  8. \clearpage % Start a new page

Hi!

How do I create a very simple and plain layout for the abstract? I would only like to have a heading saying "Abstract" (similar to the heading of e.g. table of contents), and then the text underneath. I have tried removing the specifications for the abstract page in thesis.cls, but it does not get me any further. Do you have any suggestions for how I can do this and still have the abstract as part of the table of contents?

Thank you for your help!

Greetings,
Kate

Hi Kate,

No problem! Just replace the abstract section in the template with:

  1. %----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  2. % ABSTRACT PAGE
  3. %----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  4.
  5. \addtotoc{Abstract} % Add the "Abstract" page entry to the Contents
  6. \addtocontents{toc}{\vspace{1em}}
  7.
  8. \section*{Abstract}
  9.
  10. The Thesis Abstract is written here (and usually kept to just this page). The page is kept centered vertically so can expand into the blank space above the title too\ldots
  11.
  12. \clearpage % Start a new page

Hey Fábio,

Just add \usepackage[portuguese]{babel} right before \begin{document} in main.tex and that's it!

Hey Vel,
Am doing a cummulative thesis and each chapter is a paper and have its own abstract. How I can do several abstracts in your template without the university name and the rest of the info?
