The amsmath package provides the \genfrac command which allows to create your own fractional structures. So you can build an own fraction very easy.
  1. \documentclass[11pt]{article}
  2. \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
  3. \usepackage{mathtools} % loads »amsmath«
  5. \newcommand*{\bfrac}[2]{\genfrac{\lbrace}{\rbrace}{0pt}{}{#1}{#2}}
  7. \begin{document}
  8. \[
  9. \left(\nabla^2+n^2(x)\,k^2\right)\bfrac{E}{K}=0
  10. \]
  11. \end{document}

The package manual has the details. For instant access open a command line.
  1. texdoc amsmath

Your example has probably been done with an array environment enclosed by curly braces. For more about math typesetting refer to the excellent »Math mode« document.
