New Maintainer for TeXnicCenter

Postby Sven » Sat Jul 05, 2008 11:07 am

Starting with the 1 Beta 7.50 release, TeXnicCenter has a new maintainer for the software development: Tino Weinkauf.

Along with this change we will also change the way of releasing new versions of TeXnicCenter. Over the last years we released the software rather infrequently. Starting summer 2008 we will have at least two releases each year. The amount of new features or fixed bugs may vary with each release, but at least the advancements (even if they are small) are passed on to the community.

TeXnicCenter has been proven to be a stable and useful LaTeX editor. Currently, we have around 40.000 downloads each month. This shows that TeXnicCenter has matured. Therefore, we will also change the labelling of the software regarding its development status. Previously, TeXnicCenter has been labelled as "Beta" software. Until the end of 2008 we will release a stable version of TeXnicCenter which will be based upon the current release 1 Beta 7.50. From that point on, stable releases are meant for the end user's daily work. "Beta" or "Alpha" versions are unstable and should only be used for testing purposes.

We need your input, so please, submit any bugs you may encounter. This will help us to improve the software. You can submit new bugs here:

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?atid=47 ... unc=browse

New developments are on their way, stay tuned.

This is really nice to hear :) I'm looking forward to see new versions of this cool software.

However, I would like to ask if there's some roadmap or something like that which would explain the future development of TexnicCenter. For example, do you plan to "stick" to Windows platform or to expand it to other OS' as well. Maybe it could be useful to have some kind of survey where people would be able to choose that they want to be implemented in TC. Of course the developers should prepare this survey, and IMO this should by no means be a "must to do" for the developers. Just that they get some information. It is true that the "Feature request" tracker on there are way too many things proposed there.

Hi,

Tino has planned to provide a roadmap soon. But I can promise you, that it will not contain support for non-Windows platform ;) This is simply due to the fact, that TeXnicCenter is based mainly on Windows specific code. Supporting it for other platforms would require a complete rewrite.

Thanks for the answer. I think that it's cool if we know what exactly we can expect in the future :)

Thanks for a really cool program :)

Development of the TeXnicCenter software should definitely continue. I find it invaluable and should be the n1 editor for LaTeX. Very good effort with the new website!
